Benigna's Creek Chambourcin is a red wine that is pleasing in every aspect from visual to finish. This wine delights the eye with its crystal clear, shimmering red hue. It kind of reminded me of Dorothy's ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz. Yes, indeed, when you're enjoying a bottle of wine, there's no place like home. (That's my public service announcement for this page)
This Chambourcin's nose is part of the pleasure of drinking it, especially for those who enjoy a fruity aroma. The predominant smell upon opening the bottle is that of fruit; black cherry and perhaps a hint of strawberry comes to mind. After letting it breathe, much of the fruitiness dissipates and what is left is a more subtle fruit, licorice, and a bit of spiciness.
On the palate, the first thing I noticed was a big, fruity taste; cherry and plum. There is a faint perceptible sweetness that might put this wine in the off-dry category. There is no harsh acidity and almost no tannic astringency; qualities that make this wine go down very easily! It also has a very smooth, moderate finish.
At about $11.00 per bottle it's affordable and enjoyable enough to put this Benigna's Creek Chambourcin on the list of your regulars. And with all the health benefits of drinking red wine in moderation, that would be my hearty recommendation.
