Tonight, for dinner we opened a bottle of Conundrum California
White Table Wine
2003.
We bought two bottles of this wine at Total Wine and More in Columbia, SC,
during one of our trips south and had been saving it for a time when we
wanted something a little special. With my first sip, I thought "WOW!
Why did I wait so long to try this?" I kept thinking of what I had
been missing for the last four months.
In the glass, this wine has a bright, clear, pale yellow hue. On the nose, I was reminded or a floral, citric bouquet that I thought was very alluring. As inviting as the aroma was, I was not prepared for the many layers of flavor this wine has on the palate. It is one of the most complex wines I have ever tasted.
The front end had a distinct floral quality that reminded me of what jasmine might taste like. Mid-palate was much softer and had a flavor of melon and pears. Conundrum has a long, satisfying finish that is very crisp and clean with elements much like that of lemon zest. If I were looking for adjectives to describe this wine, I might choose tropical and spicy.
The alcohol content is 13.5% and it retails for about $22.00 for a 750 ml bottle.
Caymus Vineyards began their Conundrum line with the first vintage in 1989. Winemaker, John Bolta set out to produce a food-friendly, blended white wine that could match the complex flavors being offered by innovative chefs. What resulted is a delightful blend of five different grape varietals: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat canelli, Semillon and Viognier. Conundrum eventually became a seperate brand of Caynus Vineyards.
