There's a lot of information being published today obout the health bebefits of drinking red wine. Research indicates that drinking red wine in moderation* is good for your health. Most of us are aware that red wine offers cardiovascular benefits by increasing HDL (good cholesterol) levels. What may not be as widely recognized it that it also contains powerful antioxidants, may boost your immune system, lessen the degenerative effects of osteoporosis and may even help fight some forms of cancer. Specifically, drinking four ounces of red wine daily can help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by up to 50%. And...the Mayo Clinic did a study and found that in postmenopausal woman, those who drank red wine tended to have lower breast density (high breast density is an established risk factor in breast cancer). In addition, the social and stress reduction aspects of relaxing with friends over a glass of wine have the capacity to increase your sense of well-being and enjoyment of life.
In 1991, the health benefits of drinking red wine made prime time news headlines when CBS's 60 Minutes featured a segment about how the French, despite their rich diets of butter, cream, cheese, eggs, sauces and croissants... and the fact that they tend to get less exercise than Americans, had a heart disease rate 40% less than that of Americans. The term "French Paradox" was coined for this phenomenon and the French's consumption of red wine was given credit for it. What a boon for the wine industry! Word got out that drinking red wine had proven cardiovascular benefits and American's began drinking more wine.
